Heroes {Community} Launch - Bloomington, IL

Posted by Dan Rigsby on April 9th, 2008

I finished a Heroes {Community} Launch event in Bloomington, IL for the users group last night. This event was setup with 3 speakers. Paul Hacker covered Windows 2008 for 40 minutes, Dave Paulson covered SQL Server 2008 for 55 minutes, and I was left to cover everything that is Visual Studio 2008 in about 45 minutes. It was quite a daunting task!  The trip to Bloomington was about 2.5 hours.  Paul and I drove together and got there about an hour early to make sure everything was setup for the presentations.

My talk over Visual Studio 2008 covered:

  1. What are the features in Visual Studio itself targeted to different types of developers: All, Windows Client, Web Client, Office, Mobile, and Server
  2. What are the changes in the .Net Framework 3.5
  3. What are the languages extensions introduced in .C# 3.0 and VB 9.0

The demonstrations included:

  1. New project properties
  2. Wpf Editor
  3. CSS Support
  4. Javascript Intellisense
  5. Javascript Debugging
  6. Web Programming Model in Wcf
  7. A very fast overview of all the new language extensions in C#

Overall, my presentation went pretty well.  I did feel quite a bit rushed and talked faster than I should have.  But by then end, I had covered most of what I wanted to cover, and I hope people got a lot out of it. It was really awesome to get to meet a lot of the developers out in Bloomington.  It was a small crowd, but there were some bright people there.  I really enjoyed the chance to network with them.  I hope they invite me out again in the future.

Also, if you are interested in learning more about Wcf, want to hear me speak, or what to hear some other great speakers, there are a few code camps and DoDN events coming up:

  • Central Ohio Day of .Net - Registration is still open.I am doing an Introduction to Wcf session here.
  • IndyCodeCamp - Registration is closed, but you can get on the wait list.  I am doing 3 sessions here: 2 on Wcf and 1 on Scrum
  • West Michigan Day of .Net - Registration is still open.  I am doing an Introduction to Wcf session here.

Thanks for coming out and providing the great presentation. With what little time you had, I thought you did a great job! We really appreciate both you, Paul and Dave taking the time to allow us to benefit from your talents. We would deffinately jump at the chance to have you guys out again. I am registered for the Indy Code Camp. I hope to see you there. I will probably be in your Scrum session.
