Zune 3.0 and Windows Server 2008 64-bit
Posted by Dan Rigsby on September 16th, 2008
I have been looking forward to today for weeks now. Version 3.0 of the Zune software was released and adds a slue of new features.
My laptop runs Vista-64 and it upgraded to version 3.0 with no issues. However, when I tried to update the software on my Windows Server 2008 Workstation, I received the following error:
Hmm, doesn’t it looks like it tried to upgrade to the 32-bit version of software? Well, I explicitly went to the Zune site and download the 64-bit version. And guess what… I got the exact same error! Version 2.5 runs fine on this OS. This is very disappointing
Anyone else encounter anything like this? I’ll update this post again if I discover more. Until then, Windows Server 2008 64-bit users may be out of luck.

Hi Dan,
I was able to get the x64 version to install on my Windows Server 2008 workstation with no apparent problems, but I was doing a clean install and not an upgrade from 2.5. However, when I launched it the first time, it tried to perform an automatic update and I received the same error message that you did. That’s when I checked the version number and found that the installer had put down the Zune 2.5.447.0 bits. Not sure what to think about this, but hopefully it’s just a bug in their update msi file that is not detecting Windows Server build 6001:SP1 correctly.
FWIW – A quick look at the Zune forums indicates other W2K8 Server users are having the same problems.

Do you think running the installer in XP compatibility mode will work?

Yup… I came to the same conclusion as Mike. I’m hoping they will actually release a 64-bit version of Zune 3.0 as a direct download.

Hitting the same issue as you guys. Really annoying because most of my platform are Win2k8 x64.

Scratch that. The solution is very simple: http://channel8.msdn.com/Posts/Zune-Zune-and-more-Zune/

I got it to install as well, but my steps were a little different from Bo’s.
1. Uninstall Zune 2.5
2. Crack open the ZunePackage30.exe & extract the files
3. Run the zune-x64.msi file found in x64\Packages folder
So far so good…

Mike’s way worked like a charm, installing the extracted MSI did the trick. Thanks!!
